Union in Truth: An Interpretive History of the Restoration Movement
Published in Paperback by Standard Publishing Co. (July, 1994)
Average review score:

The "must read" history of the Restoration MovementThe Restoration Movement, which saw its beginning in the early 19th century, was one of the fastest growing religious movements ever witnessed on the North American continent. Although its appeal for "the unity of all believers based on the authority of scripture" still resonates today, the movement faltered and stagnated. This book explains why in a clear way.

Union Jack
Published in Paperback by Marvel Books (April, 2002)
Average review score:

The OTHER vampire hunter!I don't know exactly when it happened in the comic books, but at some point Union Jack became a vampire hunter like another better-known Marvel hero. Whenever it happened, however, it was a great move! This reprints the Union Jack limited series of a few years ago and it's still as relevant as it was then. Why Marvel hasn't brought UJ back for another go around is beyond me, but this story is a great one, and the artwork is good too!

The Union of Mahamudra & Dzogchen
Published in Paperback by Rangjung Yeshe Publications (01 August, 1994)
Average review score:

What it is....This book consists of a text by Karma Chagmey, one of the founders of the Palyul division of the Nyingma school of Vajrayane Buddhism. At first I was put off by it, since it implicitly promises to discourse on the principles of not one, but two, sublime paths, Dzogchen _and_ Mahamudra; then after going through a pretty normal (for Vajrayana texts) progression through the four thoughts that change the mind, etc., becomes a discourse on Guru Yoga with Chenrezig as the Lama. In other words, there is a faint sense of having shown up for the lecture and having to begin at the very beginning and patiently work up to the real juicy parts. This attitude, of course, is one of our major obstacles in the West to really appreciating the "advanced teachings." We want them, but don't want to go through the boring parts. On re-reading the text, however, I found it very charming and down to earth. It made my practice feel more centered by getting me back to basics (refine the details) while keeping the goal (the sublime) in mind. As an overview of all of the essentials of the path, it also helps my Ngondro. Sort of puts things into a kinder, gentler perspective. I now find it a great companion on trips, being relatively thin (for packing and carrying in a camera bag or pack), written in everyday (to the extent this is possible) language and lacking in pretension. Chokyi Nyima's comments are also helpful, and he does occasionally drop in the technical tidbit we all long for. Finally, if you have any Palyul empowerments, it is great to see a book written around the lineage founder's text. It is great to know the founder was kind and had a sense of humor, and especially that he encouraged lay practitioners.

Union Pacific Across Sherman Hill: Big Boys, Challengers and Streamliners
Published in Paperback by Kalmbach Publishing Company (November, 1999)
Average review score:

An excellent book on Union Pacific golden age steam. This is a great book if you're a steam fan. It's covers all types of motive power used by Union Pacific during the late 40s and 50s, 4-8-8-4 Big Boys, Challengers, Northerns and so on. All the photos are black and white, but are high quality with detailed captions and chapter descriptions. This book would also be useful for anyone interested in modeling a railroad around this area or for UP steam in general. Another high-quality book from Kalmbach Publishing.

Union Pacific FEF-3 Class 4-8-4 locomotive drawings
Published in Unknown Binding by Wildwood Publications ()
Average review score:

Still Searching ...I'm an aspiring live-steamer that would like to start with a simple project: a 1.5" scale model of an UP FEF-3, probably the 844.
I've been searching for this book for some time, and have some additional information on it. Email if you'd like to talk about this book or other rail topics.

Union Pacific: Salt Lake Route
Published in Hardcover by Boston Mills Press (November, 1995)
Average review score:

CaptivatingRare is it that one combines such great writing and great photography and design into a nice package. This book is without a doubt on of the best railroad books on the market. Not only are the photographs works of art themselves, so are the words flowing the pen of author Hemphill. Thoroughly researched, taking what could be dry history and turning it not only into a page-turner, but also feast for the eyes.

Union: Strange Stories and Peculiar Poems
Published in Paperback by Writers Club Press (May, 2002)
Average review score:

Super FreakyIf strange, literate, and gory is your thing, then this is your book. Imagine HP Lovecraft and William Gibson giving birth to some genetically enhanced offspring and that pretty much sums up the tone of these stories.

United Mind Workers : Unions and Teaching in the Knowledge Society
Published in Hardcover by Jossey-Bass (April, 1997)
Average review score:

An important and influential book. Highly recommended!United Mind Workers is a very stimulating and important book. It is the first book to discuss how to organize teachers and their work differently, and the first book to capture the attention of both major American teachers unions. Already widely influential, it seems destined to play a major role in the current reform movement. I highly recommend it to all interested in the improvement of American education. -- William Boyd, Penn State University

The Unknown Revolution: 1917-1921
Published in Paperback by Black Rose Books (August, 1997)
Average review score:

The Real DealThis book is divided into two parts. One is the author's first-hand account of the anarchist Makhnovist movement in the Ukraine shortly after World War I, which had to fight both the Red Army under Trotsky, and the reactionary White Army. The other part deals with the anti-authoritarian rebellion at the Kronstadt naval base, which was brutally crushed by Trotsky's soldiers. If one is interested in learning about anarchist resistance in the early days of Bolshevism, I would highly recommend this work, as well as The Makhnovist Movement, by Peter Arshinov; The Russian Anarchists, by Paul Avrich; and The Bolsheviks And Workers' Control, by Maurice Brinton.
